Tips To Help You Move During National Moving Month

Summer is quickly approaching, which means more homes will be getting bought and sold. This means that there are more homeowners on the move. May is recognized as National Moving Month! If you have recently purchased a new home in Colorado Spring, The Platinum Group, REALTORS has 7 tips to help make your move go a bit more smoothly.

1. Go Through Everything
Take a look at what you have and see if it's really something you need. Decluttering before you move can help make the packing process go a lot quicker. In addition, it's less stuff that you'll  have to pack up, bring to your new home, unload and organize. When going through your things, organize your belongings by category. Instead of spending the day cleaning out the entire bedroom, spend an afternoon sorting through all the clothing you own. When going through your belonging, separate your things by keep, donate and sell.

2. Transfer Your Information
Schedule a date for your disconnections or transfer of utilities. Make sure the disconnect happens the day after you plan to move, so you still have electricity the day of your move. For your new home, the earlier you make the call, the better as sometimes companies will not be able to come out the next day to make the switch. It's also important to change your address before you move. It's recommended to do it a week before you move, so you do not miss out on any important mail, such as bills.

3. Start Packing Early
Packing little by little is far less stressful than trying to tackle it all in one day. If possible, start packing as early as a couple months out. Start with the stuff you know you won't be using, such as off-season clothing and books to pictures and keepsakes. Pack up decorative items several weeks before you move, as these pieces can be some of the trickiest to store and pack because they're often fragile and oddly shaped.

4. Label Everything Clearly
When labeling boxes, don't just label what room it is, make it easy on yourself when unpacking and clearly label what's in the box. In addition, when stacking boxes, you may not be able to see every single side, so make sure you label the top and a couple of the sides. You will be thankful you went into detail when it comes time to start unpacking.

5. Separate Important Items
Important documents, such as passports, checkbooks, birth certificates and important items like medication should be kept separate from the items you're packing. Don't put them in boxes that will be in a moving truck. This will lessen the chances of hem getting misplace or lost. It's best to have a box that will be kept in the car with you that includes these important items so you will know exactly where they will be once you get into your new home.

6. Don't Forget About The Food
Before you move, ensure you use the food that you already have in your kitchen, such as canned food, frozen food, fresh fruit and vegetables and other items that won't travel well. While you shouldn't stop by food altogether, it is wise to only buy what will get eaten before moving.

7. Pack An Overnight Bag
After moving your boxes into your new home, you might be a little tired, which means not everything will be unpacked. You'll want the essential items within easy reach like a change of clothes and toiletries. This is also a great way to move small electronics like laptops during the move to reduce the risk of them getting damaged, or worse, stolen.

Finding your dream home and moving into it can be an exciting time, however, it can also be stressful. Hopefully, with these seven tips, your next move will go smoothly. 5 Tips For Moving With Kids

Moving can be stressful, whether it's across town or to another state. Adding kids into the mix and it can be challenging. However, it's not impossible. The best team of real estate agents in Colorado Springs is here to help with five tips for those planning to move with children.

1. Don't Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Moving can be a stressful time, especially when you have kids. While packing itself may not be hard, when you bring kids into the mix, it could make things a bit difficult. Don't be afraid to ask a friend or family member to help you watch the kids while you pack. You could also set up a play date and have your kids out of the house while you get things packed away and ready for the move.

2. Get Them Involved

Moving is not only a stressful time for you, but it's a stressful time for your kids too. Depending on how far you are moving, your kids are going to have to prepare themselves not only for a new house but possibly for a new school as well. To help them get through this time, let them be involved as much as they can. From getting their input on what they want in a new home to helping you pack (nonbreakable items of course), the more they help, the easier the transition could be for them.

3. Label All Boxes Clearly

While labeling boxes is always a good idea when packing, when it comes to packing the kids' items up, make sure to include everything that goes into the boxes. Instead of just labeling the box "toys," it will make it easier on you to include what kinds of toys are in the box. When your kid wants to play with a specific toy, you won't have to rummage through everything to find it.

4. Make The Trip Easy

If you're moving with a recently potty-trained toddler or pre-schooler, think about putting them in pull-ups for the ride. This will help you in case you can't find a bathroom along the way. Another way to help make the trip a bit easier for you and for your kids is to pack them a few toys and activities to keep them entertained. This can be a stressful time in your life as well as your kids, so make it an adventure and let your kids do things they normally wouldn't get to do, such as having specials treats or letting them stay up a bit later than normal.

5. Get Back To Your Daily Routine

After the move, you should take advantage of the chaos and let you kids do new things they normally wouldn't get to do. However, you should try to go back to your normal routine as soon as you can. Some things may have to change once you're in your new home, but try to keep as many consistencies as you can. If they have a special bedtime routine or if you do a family game night each week, keep those activities going on in your new house to make it feel as much as home as possible.

5 Tips To Help You Move

Moving can be exciting, nerve-wracking and stressful all at the same time. However, it doesn't have to be with the best team of real estate agents in Colorado Springs helping you along the way. From house hunting to signing papers, a trusted Colorado Springs real estate agent is here for you from start to finish. The Platinum Group, REALTORS has five tips to help the move into your dream home be a little less stressful.

1. Clearly Label Boxes

In addition to labeling what's in your box, add what room they'll be going into, as well. When moving into your new home, unpack by room. The unpacking process will go a little smoother and feel more manageable. In addition to labeling the top of the box, it is a good idea to also label the sides. This will help know what box it is, even when it's stacked.

2. Move By Room

Try to get like items together. This will help moving feel a little more organized. Although you can fit those kitchen utensils into your living room box, it might make finding those items later a bit difficult. If you keep all the kitchen items together, unpacking that room will not only go faster, but it will also be less stressful later. If you are having to run to different rooms when unpacking just one box, you will find it will take you much longer. Keep it easy and keep like items together.

4. Keep Like Items Together

Although you will be packing by room, make sure like items go together. Keep light bulbs with lights and extension cords with appliances. You can also keep the small loose parts attached to the item they belong with, which can help ensure you don't loose it in the moving process. Attach it with tape or in a small envelope. Keep larger items like cable TV cords in resealable bags and tape it to the back or underside of the item. You can also have a "parts box" that is filled with cables, cords, parts and brackets.

5. Pack Ahead

Although sometimes moving can be unexpected, try and pack what you can as early as possible. This will help save time on moving day. Depending on the time of the year you move, pack the clothes you aren't wearing. If you are moving in the summer, you can pack up your winter jackets, as you are not needing them. Pack up your shampoo and other cosmetics and live out of a travel case for the last week.
